TDS
TDS (total dissolved
solids) is not an individual contaminant but a summation of almost all
contaminates in the water.
The Environmental
Protection Agency has set a maximum of 500 parts per million of TDS in
public drinking water. Water with high TDS may have an unpleasant “thick”
taste and can be difficult to use for cooking.
Waters with high TDS may
also tend to scale piping or leave a spot or residue on flat surfaces such
as sinks.
TDS is used as a benchmark
in evaluating the performance of purification systems. Water with low TDS
typically tastes much better.
