SULFUR TREATMENT

There are a number of ways to treat sulfur depending on the amount of sulfur and other minerals in the water.  One of the easiest ways is with the Kinetico Sulfur Guard System.

Sulfur Guard™

The Kinetico Sulfur Guard system removes Hydrogen Sulfide to keep your water fresh and odor-free. While other solutions require multiple stages of expensive, cumbersome, high-maintenance equipment, Kinetico’s Sulfur Guard system takes care of hydrogen sulfide problems all in a single, compact unit. And since the only maintenance required is the addition of common household bleach, Kinetico’s Sulfur system is hands down the easiest sulfur removal system to maintain. Kinetico Sulfur Guard Systems use exclusive Sulfaban™ filtration media to remove hydrogen sulfide gas from your water, leaving it odor-free.

Periodically your system automatically cleans itself and regenerates the media using common household bleach. Afterward, the system is completely rinsed with clean water, so it can continue providing you with fresh water.

Only Kinetico Sulfur Guard systems combine all of the following features:

bullet

Non-Electric Operation
Kinetico Water Filters function without using electricity, instead using the force of moving water to automatically switch from cycle to cycle. Kinetico systems are not susceptible to power outages or surges. And there are no expensive electric timers or microprocessors to repair or replace.

bullet

Twin Tank Design
Two softening tanks provide conditioned water, 24 hours a day, even during regeneration. When one tank is exhausted, the other is activated to continue softening your water. The exhausted tank is cleaned with the conditioned water produced by the on-line tank for optimum results.

Metered, demand regeneration Kinetico systems measure your water use and regenerate only when necessary to save money and conserve water. Because other systems on the market have only one softening tank, they cannot clean themselves and continue to soften your water at the same time, making them less efficient and more expensive to operate.

"Service persons report that microprocessors are the most frequently broken components of ... (electric) systems.  The damp, often salty environment is hard on electronic circuitry."

Chlorination

Luckily, hydrogen sulfide can be removed through several different methods.  One way is to convert it into a precipitate, a yellowish or gray powder that can be removed with filters. First, chlorination is used to oxidize the contaminant. The chlorine reacts with the hydrogen sulfide to produce sulfur, which is then removed with an automatic back washing filter.

Chlorination systems consist of:

bullet

Chlorinator
A chemical feed pump designed to inject a predetermined level of chlorine into the water. Chlorine will kill bacteria and oxidize high levels of iron, manganese, and sulfur.

bullet

Retention Tank
This tank is used to insure contact time for proper bacteria kill, and/or time to completely oxidize iron and sulfur.

bullet

Carbon Filter
Removes chlorine, precipitated sulfur, precipitated iron, and organics, which may be present in water.

Other filtration systems such as manganese-treated greensand can be used to remove light to moderate amounts of sulfur in the water.  These are simple to operated and effective.

It is crucial to get an accurate test of the water when working with any elements but especially sulfur.

There are other methods such as aeration that can be effective at removing sulfur however these methods have the potential to forcibly inject outside mold and bacteria from the surrounding environment.  These methods should be followed by a disinfection system such as chlorination or ultraviolet (UV) to kill the microbes.
